Dear Kris,
As we near the end of the school year, we reflect on the great success we have seen with our students.  This is thanks to the wonderful support of mentors, teachers, and community members.  This issue is dedicated to the amazing mentors and teachers who make a difference every day!

Take care,
Kris Marshall

Mentor Highlight - Brett Farrell
Proven Performance... words from a first year mentor:
brett

Brett Farrell, Sr. Accountant of Shinsho American Corporation, is wrapping up her first year mentoring with Winning Futures at Pontiac Central High School.

Brett enjoys working with the students because she believes that "working with young people gives you an opportunity to forget about the hassles of your daily life and focus on giving yourself to someone else who can learn from you and who needs your guidance and support.  It is very refreshing."

She believes her experiences have been "very humbling and puts a lot of aspects of my own life into perspective."  Brett continues, "The girls really want someone to be there for them as a positive role model and give them the positive reinforcement that kids should get."

Teachers Highlight - Butcher Community High

dynamic duo

"Winning Futures has been an integral part of our high school program.  I am especially impressed with the mentors who have been involved now and over the years.  These individuals are dedicated and committed with their time, energy, talents, and resources to developing positive relationships that have a great influence on our students," states Dave Jackowicz.

Butcher Community High teachers Dave Jackowicz and Pauline Saltsman have both been teaching for over 20 years.  "I enjoy teaching in an alternative program because with the smaller student population I can make more of a 'connection' with each student.  This gives me the opportunity to get to know each of my students on more than just an academic level.  I can watch them grow into adults," says Saltsman.

This dynamic duo has, no doubt, aided many students in graduating from high school.  The synergy from teachers and mentors ensures the Winning Futures principles are instilled into students.
